Lucas: These Panthers could be special

Lucas200p Cornerback Ken Lucas is beginning to think this edition of the Carolina Panthers could be something special.

"I think this year we're walking around with a little swagger now," he said. "That's something you have not seen in the past. We feel like we have what it takes to go out and compete at a high level and do some big things this year.

"But we're still flying under the radar; people say we're an OK team, but one game (the preseason blowout of Washington) is not going to earn any respect from anybody. We have to go out and do it week-in and week-out. That's something we have not done since I've been here. We'll win a game, lose a game, and if we're going to get where we're trying to get to this year, we can't afford to play like that.

"We've got to go out and win five, maybe lose one. That's a good ratio right there. It's all about consistency. That's what makes a good player, being consistent in what you do."

Lucas, by the way, is becoming one of the spokesmen for the Panthers, almost always available in the locker room following practices and games. His forgiving Steve Smith for the latter's training camp assault on him was huge for team unity, whether it completely cleared the air or not.

And Lucas usually has something to say, rarely falling back on cliches ("Hey, we're giving 110 percent, taking 'em one game at a time") unlike so many of his fellow athletes in all of the major sports.

Oh isn't it awesome to hear one of our players talking like this....FEELING this way??? I think this ATTITUDE is what we've also been missing the past couple of seasons, with injuries its like everyone just gives up. SB year, we had THIS attitude and we weren't even on the radar, which it is fun to win and be off the radar....

Awesome read for me because i know we feel this way about this season's team and its nice to know they do also.

Thanks for that PG. I feel this way every year BUT doesn't usually take long for reality to set in. We need a run and I'm thinking more like 10 and lose 1 is a better ratio.

I'm glad Lucas has feelings.
Maybe it was all the time he took off for a little broken nose that got him to realize his feelings.
I'm thinking he should stop talking, and start playing. Playing tough, that is.
It's hard for me to respect a guy that takes two weeks off when he breaks his nose.

I don't think that's the case. Being as it was the Pre-Season and all I think 2 weeks was probably appropriate. The team probably was controlling that. As far as talking, fine if you are doing your job and got something to talk about if NOT - Shut up (especially to Steve).

being pre season i don't think in is unrealistic to take off...he does need to watch the mouth though i'll agree to that!
