TAMPA - The Tampa Bay Lightning said Tuesday that John Tortorella will not return next season as head coach. Despite leading the team to the Stanley Cup in 2004, the team's new ownership wants to make a change.
"This has been a very difficult decision because of everything that John Tortorella has meant to and done for this organization," General Manager Jay Feaster said in a statement released to the media.
The team has not announced who will replace Tortorella, but published reports suggest it will be former Los Angeles King's coach Barry Melrose.
