Any bird watchers out there?

I have a question about finch (common redpoll) nesting behavior that I can't find the answer to on any Audubon sites, and am hoping someone who knows a lot about these birds (or any bird for that matter) can help me out.

Nesting Habits: The Common Redpoll's nest is an open cup of fine twigs, rootlets and grasses lined with a thick layer of feathers or hair. The bird nests in a small trees or shrubs. During the long Arctic night, Common Redpolls sleep in snow tunnels to keep warm.

I enjoy birdwatching in my yard. I have a faucet that I leave on with a tiny drip into the dog's water bowl outside my kitchen window which a cardinal that's been around a long time absolutely loves. He perches on the faucet, and bends his head to drink directly from the spigot. Outside one of my living room windows is some Ixoria that is blooming right now (red/orange blooms) that the hummingbirds love.

Well - here's my question........ has anyone ever heard of birds building a nest, (in this case in the wreath on my front door), laying one egg, abandoning the nest for 3 weeks, then coming back to the same nest and laying 5 more eggs?!? I think my comings and goings ran the pair off initially, but apparently, they couldn't find any better place to build, so they came back. I'm sure that first egg is no longer viable, but anxious to see the others hatch.

Birds is crazy people.

If your in a heavy populated area, not many woods, I could see it.
Birds are resourceful. And when its time for the little ones ,they look for any areas high up and shield from predators.

I could show you 5-6 nest in schrubs and bushes around the house .

That's pretty neat that they built a nest right in the wreath on your front door.
we had a wooden doll houses that i built for my daughter years ago, we had it in the garage up on a shelf and a bird moved in and built a nest in it.
